July 29th – Day 29

“A rest day it was, the triumph is gone, new challenge, Scary Great Bear Lake”

From the real Dave Greene. Its 2am and we are packing to get on the lake asap. The triumph of making it up Great Bear River was grand but short lived. The reality of paddling across the coldest lake in the world had set in. Its July 29th and there is frost on the tent. With frozen fingers, we pack up still with mosquitoes buzzing in our ears. Its surreal up here. Deep breath, here we go…

Sore like tree planting, On the water till midnight, On Great Bear lake now

Great Bear Lake, located in the Northwest Territories, is the largest lake located entirely inside Canadian borders. It is also the fourth largest in North America and the eighth largest in the world. Water flows out of the lake into the Great Bear River, then into the Mackenzie River.

We will be paddling 330km along the southern shore Great Bear Lake, to the mouth of the Camsell River, which we will ascend.
